SEO - Search Engine Rankings

Search engine rankings, probably the most important factor to consider if you wish to be found amongst the billions of sites out there on the internet. Beautiful web design is of no avail, if nobody else can see how pretty your site is.

Relevance refers to the extent your Web site contains content which fits the users search query. The relevance of a document improves if the search term is found in the title of the site, in any headings amongst  the site’s content and in the anchor text of any inbound links to the site. These three ensure your site at least has a chance of being relevant for a particular search query.

Importance refers to the popularity of the site and can be determined via citation, or one site linking to another. For example, if  Site A links to Site B, Site A has essentially vouched for Site B. Of course, in reality it is a lot more sophisticated than this, but the main idea is that it’s a combination of relevance and importance which affects your position in the search engine rankings.
